Introduction:
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Communication Specialist
Job
Summary: Under the direction of the Manager of Staff Communications, the Staff Communications Specialist is responsible for producing communications aimed at engaging APL staff members in the organization's mission, values, strategic goals and direction. This individual collaborates with other APL communications team members.
Duties
Writes, edits and effectively disseminates timely news and information on a daily basis to employees using various communication vehicles
Partners with intranet webmaster to establish and ensure consistent style and guidelines for intranet content
Posts and updates content, both written and graphic, on an ongoing basis for news and announcements
Supports communications planning and rollout for various APL-wide and organization-specific initiatives
Works with other departments to ensure consistency in messaging to employees, and alignment of communications with APL VSEs
Solicits and acts on feedback to ensure employee communications are relevant and effective
Supports external public relations as required, including writing and editing of items for press releases or annual report

## Qualifications
Required
Qualifications:
Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
Strong writing skills, including previous experience writing news stories and features
Strong verbal communication skills, including ability to present ideas coherently and persuasively
Strong attention to detail and follow-through
Working knowledge of portal technologies, content management systems, current trends in social media
Proficiency in Associated Press style
Ability to maintain confidentiality and to judge and address sensitive issues
Bachelor''s degree in journalism or communications.
2-3 years in internal/corporate communications or related field, with particular emphasis on intranet and writing for the web
