The Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is an internationally recognized, high performance, public health organization. Our mission is to protect human and animal health by regulating the manufacture and distribution of food additives and drugs that will be given to animals. These include animals from which human foods are derived, as well as food additives and drugs for pet (or companion) animals. We are also responsible for regulating drugs, devices, and food additives given to, or used on, over one hundred million companion animals, plus millions of poultry, cattle, swine, and minor animal species. (Minor animal species include animals other than cattle, swine, chickens, turkeys, horses, dogs, and cats.)
This position is located in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Food and Veterinary Medicine, Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of Research, Division of Residue Chemistry in Laurel, Maryland.

As a research scientist, you will work in the Division of Residue Chemistry conceiving, planning and conducting research in developing methodology for veterinary drug residues in animal derived foods and animal feeds. The broad objective of this research is to provide new scientific information which will improve the drug approval process and enhance the Agency's ability to deal with problems associated with marketed drugs. The work includes the development of analytical methods for trace levels of drug residues in animal tissues and fluids, and drug and contaminants in animal feeds, investigation of the disposition and metabolism of xenobiotics in animals and the introduction of new approaches and ideas resulting from the research into the Agency's regulatory function.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have successfully completed at least a Bachelor''s degree from an accredited college or university that included a major field of study in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR
Have a combination of education and experience. The educational courses must be equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic qualifications for the Research Chemist, GS-1320-13 position, you must have:
One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes research in analytical chemistry method development and validation; utilizing modern mass spectrometric methods for small molecule analysis using instruments such as Orbitraps, Q-TOFs and triple quadrupoles for non-targeted or targeted analysis; and applying sample preparation and extraction techniques for screening, quantitation and confirmation of compounds in complex matrices by mass spectrometric analysis.
